2/20/2011 0 Comments Pink Peony CakeThis cake is totally different than I had intended when I started making it! I had planned to make two fondant margarita glasses with fondant lime slices that would stand up on top of the cake and the design would have centered around that. I attempted twice to make the glasses and the results didn't turn out the way that I wanted so I decided to go with pink peonies but had to change some colors and elements of the design to make that work. The cake is a pumpkin sponge cake filled and iced with cream cheese icing and covered with a caramel-flavored fondant. A gumpaste peony and bud complete the design. I'm fairly happy with how it turned out, although the margarita glasses would have been cute too!

2/14/2011 0 Comments Pearl Roses Birthday CakeThis cake was a recipe I've been wanting to try for some time now - Sylvia Weinstock's Angel Food Cake with Coconut, Blood Orange and Vanilla-Lime Buttercreams. I found the recipe on Oprah's website for the 10th anniversary of the O Magazine and should you wish to try it, the recipe can b be found at http://www.oprah.com/food/Sylvia-Weinstocks-Angel-Food-Cake-with-Lime-Coconut-and-Blood-Orange-Buttercreams. The angel food recipe itself was certainly unusual as it contained butter and whole milk. I will note that the cake, while delicious, did not taste like angel food cake and had a much denser consistency. Of the three buttercreams, the blood orange was by far my favorite! They were all good though and I did find that the flavors combined quite nicely. The cake was covered in a blood orange-flavored fondant and then was topped with six pearlized gumpaste roses and a variety of sizes of gumpaste leaves. A series of vanilla-lime buttercream pearls was piped around the base of the cake. The cake board was covered in white fondant and pearlized gumpaste lettering completed this birthday cake.
2/7/2011 0 Comments Dancing CakeThis cake was for an 89 year old who still enjoys square dancing and ballroom dancing! I hope to be so fortunate to still be able to dance at that age! The 6" cake was made from carrot cake and vanilla cream cheese icing. The cake was covered in a butter pecan flavored fondant. The dancers on top of the cake were made with fondant as was the lettering on the cake board. The cake was wrapped with a black ribbon and cream cheese dropstrings and piping completed the design. The 'Happy 1st Birthday Bella' was a last minute addition for their puppy who is just turning 1 this week and they didn't want her left out of the celebrations!
