11/26/2010 0 Comments Travel-themed Retirement CakeThis cake is a sour cream chocolate cake iced with a vanilla bean Italian meringue buttercream. The cake is covered in a caramel-flavored fondant and the accents were done with chocolate fondant. Only the bottom suitcase is made with cake, the top two suitcases were made from rice cereal treats covered with fondant since a three-tier cake would have been too large for the number of people expected at the retirement party. The 'Egyptian pyramids' are rice cereal treats covered with fondant and rolled in ground almond powder to give the appearance of sand. The passport is made from fondant piped with gold piping gel. The flag on the top suitcase is the Egyptian flag and the flag on the top of the bottom suitcase is the Cuban flag as these are two places the retiree wishes to travel to in her retirement. The latches and accents on the suitcases are dusted with bronze and gold lustre dusts to try to make it look as authentic as possible.
I hope it's a great party!

11/15/2010 1 Comment iPhone CakeThe iPhone cake was made with layers of carrot cake filled and iced with vanilla cream cheese icing. The cake was covered in buttercream fondant. The buttons were made with fondant and some were decorated with fondant and others were painted with food coloring. The cake board was covered in brown fondant that was textured to give the appearance of a hardwood floor. I've been wanting to make an iPhone cake for awhile now and this was the perfect opportunity. Hope it made for an extra happy birthday!
11/1/2010 0 Comments Pink & Lime Birthday CakeThis cake has three layers of peach cream cake filled with peach mousse and iced in a raspberry-rosewater cream. It's a recipe that I've been wanting to try for awhile now! The design is loosely based on an absolutely gorgeous cake I saw done by Ron Ben-Israel sometime ago, mine is much simpler. The cake is covered with lots of fondant hearts and dots in various shades of pink and topped with a gumpaste 'J' covered with gumpaste leaves, sweet peas, rosebuds and flowers.
I love pink and lime together and the design of this cake is so feminine and pretty! |
