3/29/2016 0 Comments Persian CupcakesThese were cardamom chiffon cupcakes for a Persian-themed potluck at work. Each cupcake was topped with a swirl of saffron and rose scented whipped cream, sugared rose petals and pistachios. The whole lunch was delicious! I can't wait until our next themed potluck.

3/7/2016 0 Comments Apple Pie Layer CakeThis was the last cake recipe I hadn't tried yet from the Momofuku Milk Bar cookbook! It is an apple pie layer cake. It's very messy and hard to slice but it is delicious! The cake layers are a brown butter cake brushed with an apple cider soak. The layers are filled with liquid cheesecake, pie crumbs and apple pie filling. The top of the cake is iced in a pie crumb frosting and sprinkled with pie crumbs. Pie crumb frosting was really interesting. It was a little bit salty and more savory than most frosting is. When combined with the rest of the elements of the cake though, it is absolutely amazing! I'll definitely make this cake again!
3/5/2016 0 Comments Sock Monkey CakeThe top tier was banana cake with fudge frosting and the bottom two tiers are mile high devil's food cake with brown sugar buttercream. The top tier has a taupe chevron pattern - it was the first time I've done this technique. While it is time consuming to do, I was pretty happy with how it turned out! The middle tier is wrapped with red fondant with white polka dots and the bottom tier has diagonal Bermuda blue stripes. I made the 3D sock monkey out of fondant. I tried to make him look slouchy and was pretty happy with how it turned out! The '1' topper was made with Bermuda blue fondant and the stitching was piped on with white piping gel. Tucker's name was spelled out on brown wood grain patterned stars on skewers. I used a press to make the 'Happy Birthday' plaque for the front of the cake.
3/3/2016 0 Comments Sock Monkey Smash CakeI haven't made that many smash cakes but of all the ones I've made, this is by far my favorite one! The cake is vanilla with vanilla bean Italian meringue buttercream. And it's only the second time I've ever baked a giant cupcake cake!
I made the 2D sock monkey topper with fondant. I piped the icing on in swirls and added some accents in the colors being used for the big birthday cake this weekend. All in all, I think it turned out pretty cute! Happy 1st Birthday, Tucker! |
