10/26/2014 1 Comment Monsters vs Aliens Mutant Pumpkin CakeThis cake is themed from the Monsters vs Aliens Halloween special 'Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space'. The cake layers are chocolate Greek yogurt cake with chocolate Greek yogurt buttercream. I really like the cake layers but the buttercream is a bit too sweet for my taste. Here's a close up of B.O.B. with the archway behind him. The faces on the jack o lanterns on the archway were done with edible food marker. Dr. Cockroach is really thin and I was worried that structurally, he might not make it to delivery if I made his whole body. Instead I made a fondant skull for him to pop up out of. The cake drum is covered with black fondant patterned to look like cobblestone. The three Monsters vs. Aliens characters are made from fondant. I brushed B.O.B. with a mixture of corn syrup and peppermint schnapps so that he would look more 'slimy'. The bottom tier is covered in purple fondant with a white fondant fence. The archway is my absolute favorite part of the cake. I loved the house and the archway in the movie. I considered trying to make a cake version of the house but decided I didn't have enough time to be able to do it as detailed as I would want to. The top tier is a mutant pumpkin. If you haven't seen the tv special, you can check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBpxXvQR1eU. I love the language these pumpkins speak - it is too cute! The birthday boy wanted the cake to be healthy. Since that's a tough task to accomplish, I added this halloween themed fruit. Pumpkins made from clementines and celery sticks and ghosts made from bananas with chocolate chips. Happy Birthday Marcus!

10/19/2014 0 Comments Dinosaur CakeThis may be my favorite cake I've ever done! I was told about the dinosaur theme last month and was immediately excited. To add to that, I was given free rein in designing the cake as long the dinosaurs were happy and not scary. The letters are probably my very favorite element on this cake. They are meant to look like rocks. I distressed grey fondant and used black and white petal dusts to add shading. ![]() I added shadows of different dinosaurs around the bottom tier. These were cut from black fondant. Happy Birthday Aiden! Hope you enjoy your cake!
