5/31/2014 3 Comments Bridal Shower Damask CakeThis cake is for a surprise bridal shower. The top tier is vanilla bean sour cream cake with vanilla bean Italian meringue buttercream and the bottom tier is sour cream chocolate cake with vanilla bean Italian meringue buttercream covered in vanilla fondant. The cake topper was made with gumpaste and brushed with cotton candy lustre dust that I found in Spokane, Washington last month. It is a beautiful color! The top tier had rosettes of buttercream fading from black at the bottom to white at the top. I added a few simple pink gumpaste flowers to complete the tier. The bottom tier was stenciled with black damask and had a cotton candy fondant ribbon around the base of the tier with a big fondant bow in the front. Now that the cake is done and the kitchen is clean, it is officially the weekend for me! Here's hoping the bridal shower is fantastic!

5/25/2014 0 Comments Lustre Blue Damask CupcakesThese cupcakes are chocolate-hazelnut cake with a Ferrero Rocher baked into the centre of each cupcake topped with a swirl of Nutella Italian meringue buttercream. Each cupcake was topped with a fondant disc brushed with ice blue lustre dust. A few of the discs have lettering imprinted on them and the rest were stenciled with white damask done with vanilla bean buttercream. I had initially planned to use chocolate transfer sheets on the fondant but this didn't go well so I had to come up with a 'Plan B'. I think these ended up looking better than what the transfer sheet would have looked like anyway!
Happy Birthday Craig! 5/4/2014 1 Comment Running CakeThis cake is for the wrap party for a running clinic following a half and full marathon. The cake layers are vanilla bean sour cream cake covered with a layer of homemade caramel sauce and caramel-butterscotch buttercream. The inspiration for this cake came from classes that I've been taking lately. I didn't want it to look like another other running-themed cake I've ever seen. The top tier of the cake is decorated with gelatin sequins in a variety of shades of blue and pearl. I think this effect is so pretty! I looked up an image of the finishers medal for the race and re-created it out of fondant. The topper for the cake is a running shoe made with rice krispie treats covered in fondant with some details painted on with food coloring. The bottom tier of the cake is wrapped in fondant with an embossed design to simulate ruching. I painted some of the pleats with pearl lustre dust to give it more depth. I hope it was a great run today for everyone!
