2/11/2009 0 Comments Square Dancing CakeI must admit when I was first asked for cake ideas with a square dancing theme for a man in his 80's, I was totally stumped! Outside of the fact that I know my grandparents loved to go square dancing, I don't know much about square dancing. I searched for ideas and decided to go with a color flow icing image of two square dancers. There are also little shoe prints on the cake meant to look like prints left by dancers. The cake is a mango cake with raspberry cream cheese filling and raspberry buttercream (but without any fresh raspberries as seeds were to be avoided!). The realization then came to me that while the cake would need to be refrigerated, the color flow images could not be (as I learned the hard way on a previous cake!). The solution I came up with for this was to mount the color flow icing images on fondant discs so they could be easily taken off while the cake is in the fridge. The shoe prints are on circles and squares to represent square and round dancing (as is the logo at the center of the image). The name of the square dancing group is the Weavers and that was also to be incorporated into the cake. It was also mentioned that the square dancing group has it's own tartan and I decided that this would be a nice addition to the cake too. As such, the fondant draping on the cake is a hand painted tartan made to look like it. The colors from the tartan were picked up in other parts of the cake to bring it all together. I'm very happy with how the tartan turned out and I think this one came together nicely!
